Seeking: six creative souls

Hi friend,

This is an invitation.

I'm seeking six creative souls to spend four months working on a project of their choosing in a supportive, nurturing and safe environment of The Soup.

What is The Soup?

The Soup is a group mentoring programme without a curriculum to cook up wonderful things together: you bring the work, I will support you in actually doing it. And you won’t be alone: working alongside your peers will give you much-needed accountability, momentum and inspiration.

What can I bring to The Soup?

Do you have a half-finished personal project that you need to get over the line? A lot of shiny ideas but no clue where to begin on any of them? A portfolio that needs work but it feels too overwhelming to even start? Something you want to try but a bit scared to go for it?

All of the above?

You can bring it all to The Soup! I have been a photographer sustaining my own creative practice and projects for 15 years now, and a mentor to others for 6 of those. I also know first hand how helpful being in a supportive environment with plenty of accountability can be.

What's included in The Soup?

  • four group roundtables (once a month) to share work and receive feedback, giving you gentle structure without overwhelm;
  • four one-to-one mentoring sessions for individual support, feedback and thought partnership;
  • daily support via group chat for connection, accountability and keeping the momentum.

What's your mentoring approach?

My mentoring work is driven by love, curiosity and unschooling approaches, underwritten by neurodivergence, and brings together all my varied lived and professional experiences. When working with me, expect to be challenged and supported in equal measure – but also respected as a complicated, multifaceted human being.

I'm aiming to start in early February - basically as soon as we get a group of six together. If you want to get cooking, ping me a message so we can discuss if it's the right fit for you.

Antonina x

P.S. Don't forget, Creative Anarchy is on TOMORROW, Monday 19th January, 7-8.30pm GMT. It's a free peer-to-peer roundtable that I host monthly(ish). Bring your work-in-progress and ask for feedback, or just come and listen to others share. To get the meeting link, RSVP below or message me.

P.P.S. Make soup, not war. I think I might get this print from Anisa Makhoul.

Other things you may be interested in:

Creative Anarchy: The free peer-to-peer artist roundtables are back! The next date is 19th January, 7-8.30pm GMT. RSVP here.

The Soup: A small group mentoring programme without an agenda, to cook up wonderful things in a supportive environment, starting in February. Message me if you'd like to see if it's the right fit for you.

1:1 Mentoring: If you need help with a specific question, be it your pricing structure, feedback on your brand new website or portfolio, or need some thought partnership, 90 minute mentoring slots are available. There's also a solidarity rate for those who would not be able to access mentoring otherwise.

Family Photography: This year might be the last I'm offering my signature Adventure Sessions, and my availability is limited. If you're overdue one for your family, it may be a good idea to pencil in a date now. Hit reply to this email and let's chat. Unconventional Family Portraits are also available for those local(ish) to me.

Chaos Theory

In mathematics, chaos theory refers to the science of surprises. It deals with things that are impossible to predict or control, like turbulence, weather, our brain states, the stock market – or, dare I say it, human creativity and imagination. This newsletter is for lateral thinkers. It’s for creative souls. For storytellers. For multi-hyphenates. For chaos goblins. For those who refuse to follow a trodden path. Those who feel everything so, so deeply. For those who are still working things out. For those who refuse to contort their humanity into a predictable, likeable shape so that they, too, can win at capitalism.

chaos theory with Antonina Mamzenko Hey, Seth Godin in (I think) The Practice, writes that true learning (as opposed to schooling) is a voluntary experience that requires tension and discomfort. He calls this discomfort “the persistent feeling of incompetence” as we get better at a skill. Ira Glass calls this discomfort The Gap - the point at which you recognise what “great” in your chosen field looks like, but you also realise that you’re a long way from getting there, and it feels like...

chaos theory with Antonina Mamzenko Hey, In internet culture, shitposting refers to creating any content whose humour derives from its surreal nature, lack of clear context, and an unexpected treatment of an existing form. Originating on underground internet forums like 4chan, shitposting evolved into its own form of content creation - and sometimes it even becomes art in itself. Before I continue, a quick reminder that Words+Pictures starts on 16th of April and I still have a couple of...

chaos theory with Antonina Mamzenko Hi friend, The first rule of improv comedy is that you never say no. “No” is a buzzkill. It robs you and your partner of an opportunity for forward motion. It’s a block, a dead-end of creative pursuit. A betrayal of trust. You can’t do anything with a “no”. “No” stops the creative process. There are no possibilities in a “no”, no new horizons to explore, no new stories to tell. It’s self-evident. Yet, how many times do we say “no” to ourselves in our own...
